Western Digital WD10SPCX Internal Hard Drive – Specifications and Reviews

The Western Digital 10SPCX Slim is the latest addition from WD’s promise to slim computing. With only 7mm Z-height, the internal drive offers a great storage capacity from 320GB up to 1 Terabyte with all featuring a spindle speed of 5400-RPM. In earlier 2.5-inch drives made by Western Digital, they were required to pack them in 3 platters to reach the 1Terrabyte mark. But now, the technology has progressed somewhat and Western digital has reached the 500 Gigabyte/platter thickness in the 2.5-inch form factor, the storage capability conflict has begun, with the 1TB Slim internal drive we have. In this post, we will discuss the specs, performance, and features of this latest offering from the company.

Western Digital can now emphasis on slimming down its complete lineup of hard drives with the transition over to 500Gigabyte platter density. And by that, WD have to take into account vibration and drive shock in the thin form factor. To alleviate the platters, the company has implemented what they entitled StableTrac tech, which has a motor shaft being protected at both ends, whereas WD ShockGuard allows higher shock tolerance. Following are some details of Western Digital WD10SPCX Internal Hard Drive.

The WD’s slim drive comes with specifications such as using SATA 6Gb/s interface along with 16MB of cache. Moreover, the drive has a spindle speed of about 5400RPM with a max transfer rate of 140MB per second. Unload/Load Cycles complement the Seagate Ultrathin at about 600,000. As far as the power figures are concerned, the WD Slim consumes only 1.7w during write/read operations and 0.18w while sleep. Above all, this sleek internal hard drive comes with two years of warranty.

Performance

We keep and try a healthy number of real life as well as synthetic tests to provide an improved idea about the performance. When you are testing hard drives, no dual runs of the similar test will give you precisely the equal score, therefore we run 3 instances of the equivalent test and then take the scores to be on the secure side.

The initial test we did was the Benchmark ATTO test which gave us a sequential write score of 116.7MB/s and sequential read score of 119.83 MB/s. We performed the test with the help of Crystaldiskmark 3.0 which provided random and sequential write and read speeds.

For the actual transfer speeds, we transferred a 10 Gigabyte assorted file and a 10GB single file from the source drive to the ultrathin Seagate drive. We restart the system after each transfer operation in order to clear cache memory. In terms of actual transfer speeds, it provided about 102.4 MB/s and 104.48 MB/s in sequential write and read speeds correspondingly while mixed file transfer was sluggish at 77.57 MB/s and 95.7 MB/s for writes and read respectively. The speeds were quicker if compared with the UltraThin 500GB drives as well as 500GB Seagate solid state hybrid drive.

Design

The internal drive is designed with a hard Tied-Shaft motor and robust aluminum materials, which enhances drive pinch strength up to 30 %. This allows for a firmer structure without increasing power or decreasing performance. With the maximum possible density inside the tiniest space, the WD10SPCX drive provides as much capacity as probable to your system. It is tested and then to be used in notebooks, industrial applications and external enclosures.

Price Tag

The WD10SPCX slim 1TB internal hard drive comes at an US $ 124 which works out to $0.13 per GB. Talking about the specs, and features, it outclasses both the Seagate and UltraThin as well as offers a reasonably economical cost per Gigabyte. It will be useful for those who are looking to increase their drive’s capacity. But keep in mind that you need a slim ultrabook in order to install this.

Reasons to Buy

Following are some of the reasons to buy this internal hard drive:

  • Quiet: Silence is golden in a notebook drive. The noise reducing technology from WD yields one of the silent 2.5’’ hard drives on the marketplace.
  • Low power consumption: Advanced power management and State-of-the-art seeking algorithms features make sure long battery life and low power consumption.
  • StableTrac: Motor shaft fixed to the top cover and baseplate stabilizes platters for precise tracking through write and read operations, yielding advanced drive data in vibration and harsh shock environments.
  • Compatible: the latest gen 7 mm 2.5’’ internal drive is designed for light and thin applications. Also, it is compatible with standard 9.5 mm bays.
  • Easy Upgrade: Its Acronis True Image software, enables you to copy all your info or data to the latest without reinstalling your OS to get all the advantages of a new drive.

Final Verdict

For regular internal drive holders who are looking to replace them and previously have a lower capacity 6Gbps SATA drive, the only good thing is higher capacity. If you are just considering a higher capacity drive and don’t care a lot about performance, then 1TB WD Scorpio Blue is available at under $80. For those looking for performance, the 1TB Seagate comes at a price tag of $128 though it comes with the form factor of 9.5mm. The Seagate SSHD provides more value for money if your laptop drive was a 9.5mm one. So yes, the WD10SPCX Slim 1TB drive has contestants on several fronts. The internal drives will be worth buying because its price factor truly justifies its features.
