How to Properly Store Outdoor Furniture This Winter

In most parts of the world, winter can be quite harsh and relentless. People who have patio furniture often wonder how they can properly store their furniture to protect it from the rain, snow, and the cold, dry air that could potentially ruin it. Here are crucial tips to help you eliminate your worries about storing and protecting your outdoor furniture from the harsh climate conditions. Your patio furniture most probably sits outside for most of the year. During this period, it probably accumulates a lot of dirt or dust from its environs. Before winter is the perfect time to wash this furniture with mild soap and rinse them before storage; avoid using pressure washing as it may potentially damage wood furniture.

Storing Plastic Outdoor Furniture

Resin or plastic furniture is typically susceptible to weather ravages. Temperatures below freezing point make plastics more brittle or prone to breakages. Luckily, plastic is easy to carry and move up to your garage, shed, or basement for storage. Most plastic furniture is made to be easily stackable or folded. Before storage, thoroughly clean it and allow it to dry.

Wooden Furniture

There are no better ways to create a rustic charm to an outdoor environment than using wooden furniture. However, these pieces are easily susceptible to moisture and harsh cold weather. If left outside in the cold for long, wooden furniture might crack or splinter to irreparable conditions. You should not just throw a cover over the furniture as it will not suffice. Wood absorbs a lot of moisture from the air. Before storing wood furniture, apply a special sealant with anti-moisture characteristics. The sealant works in a similar way to paint. Make sure the wood dries completely before storage.

Storing Cushion and Fabrics

Cushions, pillows, and fabrics can damage easily due to thawing and freezing in winter. The stuffing in fabrics may grow mold and mildew if just left outside in a careless manner. Vacuum the cushions and then wash them with a bleaching detergent mixture. For cotton fabrics, however, use soap and water. It is recommended to store cushions in a storage box or shed before bringing them indoors when the rain pours. Store them in a place where there is no potential for rodents.

Metal Furniture

Metallic patio furniture brings about chic elegance to your landscape. However, this type of furniture can be quite bulky to move into storage during winter. It requires regular washing and maintenance to prevent it from rusting and keep its shiny appearance. Before storage, you could treat it with an anti-rust primer. You can add an automotive wax coat, which further reduces the probability of rusting to occur. Consider hiring professionals to help you move it but if it is not, you can ask for help from friends or family.

Wicker Furniture

Wicker furniture often has a lot of nooks and crannies. It is essential to first brush off its surface with a solution of water and bleach. Also, remove any mildew, then rinse gently with a fine spray. Allow time to dry and then apply moisture repellent where the grains are exposed. Keep the furniture in a cool and dry place and above blocks to keep its feet off the floor.

Storing the Patio Umbrella and the hammock

The patio umbrella and hammock are fragile pieces that cannot last in the harsh conditions of winter. Secure the umbrella on time, wash and dry it before storage. Lubricate the switches, locks, and hinges before closing and wrapping them in plastic that keeps mold away. Untie the hammock, fold neatly and store it somewhere safe indoors.

Finally

No matter what you decide, never leave your furniture outside in winter because no one will use them anyway. They are expensive pieces that should be preserved well to enhance their durability.
