Tips to Keep Pests Away from Your Home This Winter

We are approaching that time of the year when staying outdoors feels like a punishment. It is better to curl up in your warm air-conditioned home rather than freeze outdoors. The same case applies to pests.

When frigid air knocks and snow starts to fall, pests like bugs, mice, squirrels, and other critters like creatures find the temperatures outside too frigid to bear. Therefore, they tend to seek comfort in your house. If you do not use some type of pest control at your home before winter starts, prepare to celebrate this Christmas with a bunch of stubborn pests.

Fortunately, there is still time to protect your home from these uninvited guests with the following tips.

Check Moisture

Pests live in a moist place. Monitor moisture in your house to deny them a place they can call home in your house. Moisture mostly accumulates in the basement, attics, and garages more than other areas. For that reason, you are likely to find numerous pests in these areas. To make your house unattractive to pests, ensure that water pipes are not leaking. Additionally, be on the look for puddles, ice, and snow that build around your house and seep in. Consider using a humidifier to reduce moisture in damp rooms.

Seal Openings

Rats, mice, and other pests can find their way into your home through small openings. Even tiny gaps on the doors and windows could provide enough way for pests. Inspect all openings in doors, windows, and other areas and replace damaged or worn-out stripping.

Besides, check where water, gas, and other utility lines enter your house. Such areas are good entryways for pests because of the heat given off by the pipes. Remember to check the attic and basement spaces too. Use sturdy materials to seal any gap in such areas.

Eliminate Habitats

There are some changes you can carry out around your home to make it less attractive to pests. Keep trash bags closed and keep them away from the openings. Also, keep your yard clean and tidy by getting rid of dead shrubbery, twigs, rocks, and garbage. Also, cut overgrown tree branches to prevent pests from using them as a channel onto your roof and later into the house.

Keep the Kitchen Clean

There is nothing that attracts pests into your home more than food. If there are crumbs and other food dropping in your kitchen, be sure pests will be your visitors in the next couple of days. Ensure you keep cereal, grains, and bread in airtight containers. Clean your kitchen regularly and keep food in containers high off the ground. Normalize cleaning the dishes after every meal and take the garbage out before it piles off.

Inspect Supplies Before You Bring Them into Your Home

Check grocery bags, boxes of decorations, and deliveries before you bring them into your house. Items such as grocery bags are a good means of travel for pests since they can access food anytime.

Shake containers and things that have overstayed outside your home before you get them into your house.

Keep Bins in Sealed Areas

Cold weather comes with another nuisance- raccoons. These animals are attracted to trash and recycling bins. The most effective way to keep such animals away is to store all bins in a sealed area, such as a garage or shed. It is also prudent to use an animal-proof lid.

Vacuum Your Home Frequently

Cockroaches are the most common group of pests in our homes. This group makes habitat in small spaces where moisture and food are abundant. You can find these pests within your home, like the bathroom, kitchen, or appliances. Vacuuming is an effective way of keeping pests away from your home.
