For some people, learning Korean is relatively more challenging than, say, Spanish or French. After all, there is a need to study Hangul or the Korean alphabet.
While it may seem complicated, it was actually developed by King Sejong the Great for more accessible learning. The characters are written in such a way that it follows how your mouth looks when you speak. Once you master this, you’ll find that learning Korean is not so hard after all.
Whether you’re trying to learn Korean for work or for self-fulfillment, these five tips to learn the Korean alphabet are sure to help you out:
Know the Fun Basics
Unlike the English language, the Korean language has words written in syllable blocks. The two or three (and sometimes, four) letters used are stacked together to form such a block.
That said, every syllable block or word starts with a consonant letter. It is always followed by a vowel, which may be written below or to the right side.
The letters are positioned in such a way that the third character is always located at the bottom. When writing, you can never have three Hangul letters at the top row.
There are no uppercase or lowercase letters for the Hangul.
Compared to the Japanese or Chinese characters, each Korean alphabet letter does not go beyond five strokes.
Study the Most Common Characters
The Hangul has 14 basic consonants and ten basic vowels. While it’s hard to learn all of them at once, you could start by memorizing the most common characters.
ㅂ – This comes with a B/P sound. It is almost unheard, especially when spoken at the end of the word.
ㅁ – This box-type letter comes with an ‘M’ sound.
ㅇ – This is used when the syllable starts with a vowel sound. After all, the block should always start with a consonant for the first syllable. As this functions more as a placeholder, it does not produce any sound. However, when placed at the end of the syllable, it is pronounced as a light ‘NG.’
ㅓ– This character describes the beginning of the ‘O’ sound, much like saying ‘law’ or ‘awe.’ This is always written on the right side of the consonant letter.
ㅗ– This is another ‘O’ sound, but the pronunciation you make by saying ‘go’ or ‘bow.’ This letter, on the other hand, is always written underneath a consonant letter.
Consonants: Mind the Rules
The Hangul only has 14 consonants because of some unique rules.
For one, they don’t have sounds for the letters F, R, V, and Z, so they don’t have characters for these.
The letters Q, W, and X, on the other hand, are made by combining the sounds of two letters. For example, with the letter X, you merge the sounds of letters K and S.
Y, since it cannot be pronounced without a vowel sound, is written in vowels with double lines.
With a lot of consonants out of the picture, it’s time to work on some associations. Linking consonants with mnemonics is one of the best tips to learn the Korean alphabet.
ㅂ– ‘B’ sound in English – looks like a bed
ㄷ– ‘D’ sound in English – looks like a doorframe
ㄱ– ‘G’ sound in English – drawn like a gun!
ㅎ – ‘H’ sound in English – looks like a man with a hat
ㅈ– ‘J’ sound in English – appears like a water jug
ㄹ– ‘L’ sound in English – drawn like a ladder
ㅁ– ‘M’ sound in English – looks like a mailbox
ㄴ – ‘N’ sound in English – northeastern direction
ㅅ– ‘S’ sound in English – appears like a seashell clam
Vowels: It’s All About the Lines
Say you have more time to explore the not-so-common Hangul letters. One of the most tips to learn the Korean alphabet is to mind the lines, especially when it comes to vowels.
ㅣ = i
ㅏ = a
ㅓ = eo (sounds like ‘uh’)
ㅡ = eu
ㅜ = u
ㅗ = o
That said, the vowel’s line determines its placement in the syllable block. As such, the first three vowels above – ㅣ, ㅏ, and ㅓ – are written at the right of the consonant letter.
ㅡ, ㅜ, and ㅗ with their horizontal lines are written underneath the consonant Hangul.
Double Lines = Y Sound
If you see vowels written with double horizontal or vertical lines like ㅠ, ㅑ, ㅛ, ㅕ, ㅖ, ㅒ, it means it has a ‘Y’ sound before the vowel sound.
For example, the character ㅠ is like the word ‘you’ in English. The character ㅑ, on the other hand, is pronounced as ‘ya.’
See, it’s not that hard to learn the Hangul! By minding the tips mentioned above, you can master the language in no time.

Competition to get a job is fierce at the best of times, let alone when millions have been laid off and the number of people looking for a job far exceeds the number of jobs available. This means it could be quite some time before you find an opening in your desired field, and for that reason, it’s essential that you keep hold of your current job until you sign on the dotted line for another one. If you have a pretty decent security blanket, quitting spontaneously could be an option, but you need to think hard about how long you might be out of work for and how long your savings can reasonably last.
Believe in Yourself
Confidence can get you far in life, and nowhere is that truer than the job arena. Lockdown has seen many people retreat to their homes, limit their social contact and generally question everything about their lives, but don’t let this affect your self-esteem. It’s easy to get bogged down right now, but if you prepare well enough, network with the higher ups and keep at it, there’s no reason why you can’t make the career change you’ve been dreaming of.

As you will be dealing with children and young adults, they may not have the brain capacity to take on what you are saying, which is why you may have to relay information to the child’s family. You must be confident in your demeanor and be prepared to address and answer any questions.
Active listening is a key trait that all PNPs must possess. Not only does active listening form strong relationships with the patient and other healthcare professionals, but it’s also an invaluable communication skill that you should never take for granted. Many children will be terrified about going to the hospital, so if they have any worries or fears, you need to encourage them to be open and honest with how they’re feeling and listen to them. There are many benefits you can gain from being an active listener, such as helping to identify and solve problems, avoid missing critical information, and enhancing your knowledge and understanding of numerous topics.
As a pediatric nurse practitioner, you will be seeing several patients every day. As you will be providing ongoing care, you must have excellent organization skills, which will help you keep track of your patients and their specific healthcare needs. You will also be responsible for handling patient paperwork, so rather than having a mountain of paper stacked up at your desk, you need to understand the importance of time management and delegation. Once you become organized, this will help you stay in control and ensure everything is completed on time.
PNPs work alongside a variety of healthcare professionals to ensure children and young adults are given the best care possible. There may be instances where you need to work as a team, which is why you need to be an excellent team player, take other people’s thoughts and feelings into account, and make the correct decisions regarding patient care. Make sure that you show respect, be reliable, and exhibit optimism. A positive mindset can make all the difference and help build strong connections with your peers.
While each state will have its own requirements for PNPs, all the attributes above are must-haves to succeed in this role. Nurses who work in pediatrics must be detail-oriented, compassionate, and dedicated to their work, otherwise, the level of care for the patient may be compromised.

Identify the Trigger of the Stress
There are many factors that create stress for people. One of the most prevalent external factors is major life changes. Any time there is a transition in life, there is the potential for a stressful situation. Change is difficult for most people because change takes them into often unfamiliar territory. How these transitions are handled will dictate the degree of stress felt.
According to Mindvalley trainer Srikumar Rao, the top ten stressful life events are: a spouse’s death, divorce, marriage separation, jail term, death of a close relative; injury or illness; marriage; loss of a job; marriage reconciliation, and retirement. Though some of these are factors over which individuals have no control, they do, however, have a choice about how to react to the stressor.
Ways to Help Manage Stress
How well stress is tolerated is varied and is influenced by both genetics and life experiences. However, first and foremost, the way stress is handled is a choice. The fact is that people cause a good portion of their stress by the choices they make. Managing stress is mostly dependent upon the willingness of the person to make necessary lifestyle changes.
Strengthen relationships. Build strong relationships and keep commitments to family and friends. Ensuring that a strong support system in place is a key to tolerating stressful situations.
Time management. Don’t be a superhero; learn how to say “no.” Take breaks to keep the mind fresh; time outs when a deep breath is needed. It is important for people to not over extend their commitments. Time cannot be made. There are only 24 hours in a day no matter how hard people try to make time for more activities.
Create Predictability. The more routine created in a person’s day, the more predictable it is and thus less stressful. Again, few people enjoy change. Preparing for new things by anticipating what can happen will help reduce stress. Keep in mind that setbacks and problems are temporary and solvable.
Set realistic goals. Realistic expectations help with being prepared and gaining a sense of control. People do better when they expect less from others who can not give what is wanted. People will always disappoint at one time or another. Success will come if individuals keep working towards their goals and take action instead of reacting.
Healthy eating. I learn it from Ben Greenfield another Mindvalley coach.When the body and mind is in good health, the tolerance for stressful situations is higher. Caffeine is a stimulant and thus does not really reduce stress but rather stabilizes or increases it. Drugs and alcohol can actually worsen the symptoms by making the person less tolerant for further stress.
Dissipate the excess energy created by stress by exercising. Exercise will help strengthen the body and mind and will assist in increasing the tolerance level for stress.
Rest adequately. Tired people rarely handle stress adequately. On a continuum, fatigue can be visualized as the middle slider between good stress and distress. When fatigue slides towards the distress end; it is time to rest.
Change the tape
Marisa Peer, Mindvalley hypnotherapist explained that an individual’s belief systems may need to be challenged. Most beliefs are unconscious and individuals may not be aware of them. Reframing can be powerful; look at the situation from another’s point of view. Taking a look at the big picture can also be helpful.
Avoid people and/or topics that create stress. If possible, individuals are better served by steering clear of people or topics that create stress for them. (e.g. politics, religion)
Express feelings. It should come as no surprise that when individuals express their feelings instead of keeping them bottled up; the majority of them tend to release stress and tolerate stressful situations better than those who do not.
Be more assertive. Individuals reduce stress levels when they are willing to be more assertive, willing to compromise when necessary and don’t demand perfection.
Learn how to relax. Participate regularly in relaxation and fun. Laughing releases endorphins. People who are able to laugh at the situations usually tolerate stress more effectively. Relaxing can take many forms; from meditation to simply reading a good book.
Making lifestyle changes in and of itself can be stress reducing if an individual is resistant to the change. In the long run; choosing to make the changes necessary to reduce stress will be temporary and is beneficial physically and mentally.
What is SMART goal setting, how does it work and how can this cognitive behavioral therapy skill be used to improve your life?
Goal setting is useful to everyone regardless of whether they havea history of mental health problems or not. There are many different approaches to goal setting and using the SMART way within the CBT framework helps one to be more effective and productive in this area. Key areas to be explored in this article are listed below.

What is SMART Goal Setting?
Smart goal setting is idea that I am using based on Robin Sharma, Mindvalley quest Hero Genius Legend:
Goals are an important means to achievement; using the SMART approach helps one get more focused and provides a clear, vivid picture of the desired goal.
SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-orientated
Specific: avoid generalization, be clear, focus on exactly what you want
Measurable: need clear, tangible goals to assess if goals been met or not
Achievable: attainable, feasible so not winning the World Cup or the lottery!
Realistic: keep it real, sensible, based on fact/reality to be successful
Time-orientated: set realistic time-frames to avoid procrastination/quitting
As well as needing goals to be SMART, it is really important that you think about how much you actually want to achieve the goal as it is only if you really, truly desire to attain something that you will be likely to go the distance, keep motivated and reach the finish. Regular checks back to your SMART plan will help you to stay focused and ensure that you are on track and have not got distracted in the process.
An example of using SMART is when an overweight individual wishes to diet to lose weight. It won’t help reach the goal if they simply say that they just want to be thinner and lose a lot of weight at some point as this doesn’t encompass the SMART components as below.
Specific: I want to lose two stone through avoiding snacks and walking for an hour daily
Measurable: I can weigh myself each week to check progress
Achievable: I will stop buying snacks and walk the dog for an hour
Realistic: With support from friends this is attainable
Time-orientated: I will aim for one pound of weight loss each week over 28 weeks
The SMART approach thus becomes a step-by-step, easy to follow yet concise plan which can then provide a vital framework within which the individual’s goal can be worked towards and eventually achieved.
Key benefits of using SMART to set your goals include: they are much more planned out, focused, concise, specific and are therefore significantly easier to visualize and thus you are more like to remain motivated and be successful in attaining your goal.

Challenging but not impossible! Surviving the winter in Shanghai like a pro requires a little bit of planning and a whole lot of fluffy things…
Shanghai boasts a ‘humid subtropical’ climate, although you may well disagree with the ‘tropical’ part in December. It’s at this time that the first snowflakes start to drop, and your eyeballs start to pop. Exaggeration much? Well, not really. Sure, it’s not nearly as cold here as it is in Beijing, but hey, there’s probably a very good reason you live here and not there, are we right?
Plus, no-one’s ever warmed up at the mere thought that it’s much colder somewhere else.
Spending your first year here after moving the kids into a Shanghai international school or just planning to spend the winter months in Shanghai? Here’s how to survive (and thrive!) in this lovely city during the coldest months of the year.
- Understand the Shanghai cold and know your personal comfort limits
Funnily enough, cold is a very relative term. If you’ve spent most of your life in the Canadian Arctic, you may not need us to tell you how to stay warm. If you hail from Queensland, Australia, however, best be mentally and physically prepared.
Generally speaking, temps will drop to just above freezing in Shanghai in winter, and although that doesn’t sound excessively cold, there are factors that make Shanghai feel like the North Pole, even if it’s way above freezing. In winter, the main issue in Shanghai is the bitter coastal gale, which can feel like it cuts straight through your soul. This is what makes Shanghai feel colder in winter than temperatures may portray.
Oh, then there’s this issue…
- Central heating in Shanghai?
This is one of Shanghai’s many peculiarities, but if you’ve ever lived in a ‘mostly’ warm country, you’ll understand. Shanghai does not do central heating! This is a bone of contention with locals and expats alike, who know that central heating is a given in colder Chinese cities like Beijing.
But that’s what happens when it’s ‘only’ cold for 2-3 months a year. This means that winter in Shanghai can be challenging for those coming from Europe and North America (and even northern China), who are used to having a reprieve from the winter cold at home and work.
- Layers or thermals? BOTH!
Layering is a fail-safe method for dealing with the winter in Shanghai: the whole layer-on-layer-off routine allows you to swiftly regulate your body temperature. That said, a thermal inner layer is definitely the way to go, especially as you may feel as cold indoors as you do outdoors.
- Windproof, insulated puffy jackets
Surviving the winter outdoor in Shanghai means ensuring those bone-crunching sea winds get nowhere near your skin. This means wearing windproof and waterproof jackets that are lightweight but voluminous – this ensures you have pockets of body warmth to keep you happy even in the windiest of days.
- Protect your extremities
We lose most of our body heat via our extremities in winter, which means woolen caps and insulated gloves keep us toastier than (almost) anything else. Add a plush scarf to cover the neck-gap between beanie and jacket, and you’re good to go. Don’t forget thick thermal socks!
- Fur-lined, waterproof boots
Seriously, don’t leave home without them.
- Spicy foods and hot drinks do the trick
Never a better time to acquaint yourself with hot and spicy food and drinks in Shanghai! Keep yourself warm from the inside out with a traditional hot pot, steamed crab, and palate-peeling xiaolongbao.
- Hot water bottles – your summer in a bottle
Sold everywhere in ridiculously kitsch colours and shapes, hot water bottles are amazing, especially if you suffer arthritic pains and aches in winter. They make fabulous backrests in the office are the ideal cuddle-toy in front of the TV at night.
- Electric blankets – the best goodnight hug in winter
Sure, they’re not the most environmentally friendly additions to your home, but hey… they’re a winter must. For safety and good health (in case you’ve never used one), simply turn on your electric blanket about half an hour before retiring, and make sure to turn it OFF once you’ve crawled underneath. Overheating leads to dehydration and headaches in the morning and, for obvious reasons, you’ll also want to unplug it for the night.
- Furry PJs
Fur-lined pajamas may not be the most stylish item you’ll ever wear but, listen up: there’s an excellent reason everyone wears them in Shanghai in winter. These, along with the indulgent warmth of your electric blanket of an evening, are the only things that’ll ensure an excellent night’s sleep.
There are quite a few more handy tricks that’ll help you survive the winter in Shanghai, especially if you’re in an unheated apartment. Aside from investing in a small portable heater, you can also spruce up the insulation of your window if you’ve rented a more traditional space and buy heavy curtains that keep the cold out. You’ll also need some heavy-duty winter duvets and cozy slippers.
Walking around in a pair of plush, animal-shaped slip-on booties is the only real way to survive winter in Shanghai with style.
