L-Histidine

L-Histidine Side Effects

Among the numerous side effects of L-histidine are oxidative stress, altered cognitive function, and allergic reactions. Contraindications, on the other hand, are a set of conditions for which certain drugs, herbal supplements, or food products should not be used. For this reason, histidine is not recommended for anyone with any of these conditions. The drug should not be used by pregnant or nursing women or those who are breastfeeding.

Influence of l-histidine

Although histidine is well known as a scavenger of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals, its biological effect is not yet fully understood. This study showed that histidine inhibits the induction of IL-8 in human intestinal epithelial cells (HT-29) and Caco-2 cells. Its inhibitory effects were independent of whether it scavengers hydrogen peroxide or superoxide anion generation. Histidine directly inhibits IL-8 secretion by converting H2O2 into H2O.

Bacterial cells become vulnerable to oxidative stress when the DNA repair system is compromised. A dose of 1% L-histidine inhibits proliferation of recA-deficient Escherichia coli in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Moreover, it increased oxidative DNA damage in E. coli cells. Further, L-histidine increases the genotoxicity of hydrogen peroxide in mammalian cells.

Impact on cognitive function

Recent research has shown that L-histidine has numerous benefits for cognitive health. One study showed that histidine supplements improved working memory and reduced fatigue in men. Another study showed that it improved alertness and reduced reaction times on a battery of cognitive tests. The study results suggest that this Amino acids may be beneficial for people who suffer from fatigue and sleep disruption. It is possible that histidine may also improve mental health and lower risk of dementia.

The compound is available in a fine powder that dissolves quickly in drinks. It has a slightly bitter taste and dissolves better in warm liquids. It can be added to your morning coffee or tea. But histidine comes with a warning. Side effects include headaches, nausea, and depression. It is not recommended for use by pregnant or nursing women. Some people have also experienced adverse reactions to histidine.

Impact on food intake

It has been reported that l-histidine can reduce appetite. In animal studies, it has been shown to lower the pig’s feed intake. However, the increase in brain histidine levels may be the reason for this effect. Hence, the dose should be kept within the physiological limits. The side effects of l-histidine have also been noted to decrease fluid intake. These adverse effects of l-histidine on the food intake of the pigs have been noted to be minor.

The FEEDAP Panel has determined that supplementation with histidine may increase histidine concentration in the flesh of fish. In the study, the supplemental histidine increased histidine deposition by 1.5-fold in the juvenile yellowtail. The control group, on the other hand, had 42 mmol/kg of muscle histidine. Moreover, the histamine concentration in raw meat, derived from fish, is less than the maximum permissible level for human consumption. Moreover, he found that a person with histamine intolerance has an incredibly low risk of developing histamine poisoning.

Contraindications of l-histidine

L-Histidine is a synthetic amino acid that belongs to the family of cysteine-containing compounds. It is formed when cysteine reacts with a carboxyl or amino group, and the hydrogen in glycine is replaced by a heteroatom. In humans, this amino acid is essential for healthy blood flow and tissue growth. It is also used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections, rheumatoid arthritis, and allergic diseases. In humans, histidine plays a role in digestion and immunity.
