Uncertainty and conflict in the world can make it challenging for people to find and achieve peace. However, you can learn tools to make your days serene and calm no matter what’s happening around you. In this article, certified professional life coach Keith Orie gives five steps to bringing peace to your life, starting right now.
Focus On What You Can Control
Focusing on things that you can’t control drains your energy and lowers your mood. When you find yourself stressing out about a situation, literally ask yourself: Is this something I can control? If the answer is no, then worrying about it will not benefit you in any way.
In a media-obsessed world, sometimes it feels like you are encouraged to worry about things that don’t have anything to do with you. Understand that the human mind is not designed to do this. We are equipped to focus our energy on our immediate environment; everything else is purely overwhelming. Don’t let yourself get bogged down and distracted. Take care of yourself.
Reap the Benefits of Nature
Our brains are incredibly similar to that of early humans. While a lot has changed over the last 300,000 years, our brains have not. We weren’t designed to live in a studio apartment in a big city or a three-bedroom ranch home in the suburbs. We are programmed to interact with the natural world.
Make it a point to get out into nature. Research has proven that nature serves to reduce stress and promote healing. By staying cooped up, you’ll never have the ability to reconnect with what makes you human. And the best part? Most natural experiences are free.
Stay True to Your Intuitions
Pretentious behavior will only destabilize your understanding of self and make it more difficult to find peace in your life. Letting society dictate your choices and how you should feel about things is toxic.
You don’t have to have a flashy career, have the nicest things, or wear clothes that make you uncomfortable. Listen to yourself. As you walk through the world more authentically, peace will naturally cloak you.
Diet and Exercise
Is there any problem that a better diet and exercise can’t solve? The answer, most likely, is no. By eating a more well-rounded diet and exercising for at least 30 minutes a day, your brain will naturally release chemicals that improve mood and a sense of peace.
Don’t believe me? Try a little experiment. One day, eat exclusively healthy and work out. The next day, skip your workout and eat junk food. Compare how you feel.
Meditate
I know what you’re thinking: meditation is impossible. And for the untrained western mind, traditional meditation can be challenging. Finding alternative forms of reflection through music, time in nature, or just finding a quiet space can do wonders for making you feel more peaceful.
You can enjoy a more peaceful life. Even in an unpeaceful world, you deserve to be happy. Use these suggestions to get started today!
