How to Increase the Security of Your Home

Whether you’ve lived in your home for years or purchased a new one, there always needs to be some form of defense from this uncertain world. There are many kinds, some of which aren’t that expensive. Deadbolt locks and security signs are cheaper options, but depending on the area, you may need something a little more. Motion-activated lights and cameras might be a little steeper in the price department, but it is more than worth it overall. Below are some of the common ways to protect your home.

Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolt locks come in a few different styles, each with a unique locking system. They come in single cylinder and double cylinder styles. No matter the kind of lock, it’ll make a would-be intruder work to enter your home, giving you enough time to get on the phone and call the authorities. There is also a deadbolt lock that does not use keys at all, so there’s nothing to lose. These use pin pads and open with a code that you come up with. These are even stronger than normal deadbolts, further increasing the time it takes for someone to burst into your home.

Cameras

Security cameras keep an eye on the place even when nobody else can. With cameras planted in strategic locations, they can spot anyone stalking around your house, whether by day or the middle of the night. If someone were to break in, the cameras could capture this footage for use by the police. Using the footage, they could potentially track down and apprehend the thief and get your items back. Use security cameras to keep watch on animals, too. Even fake cameras could make somebody think twice about going forward with their activities.

In the same vein as a security camera, there are also doorbells with cameras that record anyone who comes up to it. Some burglars check the front door to see if anyone is home and play it off as something else if someone answers it.

Motion Activated Lights

Motion-activated lights, or motion sensor lights, are a must-have for outdoor home security. Not only are they used for deterring criminals, but they are also used for general safety. Someone coming home from work late at night might not be able to see the ground. With a light in front of the garage, the surrounding area will be lit without anyone having to lift a finger. If you live in an area with lots of large wildlife, like deer or bears, they could activate the light. This small annoyance is a decent trade-off for an increased sense of safety.

Motion-activated alarms are worth it, too. Any smart burglar will turn tail and run when they hear it start blaring.

Security Signs

You can buy signs from different stores to send out a warning to potential burglars. “No Trespassing” and “Beware of Dog” are classics. Some signs state that a security camera is in use somewhere on the premises, giving shady people a sense of paranoia, hopefully making them back off.

Be Upredictable

One of the best ways to protect your home is to hold to an unpredictable schedule. This may not be possible all the time, what with jobs and out-of-town travel, but even a little bit of variety might make a burglar back off. Be sure not to keep anything valuable in plain sight of any windows. Buy doors with little to no glass in them. If necessary, get a door with small windows near the top, away from the door handles.

Be Secure

While buying the latest security measures is never a bad idea, there are simpler things that can be done. Even something as little as a fake sign, or hiding anything of value to you (or thieves) is usually enough to keep the bad guys out of your home. Stay safe.
