Gambling in Australia and New Zealand Is on a Rise

Due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, gambling has gained a lot of popularity in many countries all over the world. Of course, this includes the biggest gambling nation Australia, and New Zealand as well. Australians and New Zealanders enjoy gambling in traditional land-based casinos, betting online on sports events, and playing casino games on some of the most popular online gambling sites. Thus, no wonder that in both countries gambling seems to be on a rise in 2021.

Gambling in New Zealand

In New Zealand, gambling has always been popular. However, this activity was not allowed for a quite long time. As a general rule gambling is still illegal nowadays unless it is specifically authorized by the Gambling Act of 2003.

Six land-based casinos are operating in the country where Kiwis can have fun gambling:

  • SkyCity Auckland
  • SkyCity Queenstown
  • SkyCity Hamilton
  • Skycity Wharf Casino
  • Christchurch Casino
  • Dunedin Casino.

When it comes to online gambling, playing at national gambling sites is prohibited for the residents of New Zealand. Fortunately, it does not mean that New Zealanders can’t gamble online. If the operator of the platform is based in another country and the site accepts players from New Zealand, then New Zealand citizens are allowed to play as well. Regardless of whether the site offers sports betting, pokies, or classic table games.

New Zealanders Spent More Money on Gambling in 2020

Interestingly, despite the global pandemic, lockdowns, and economic crisis, New Zealanders have spent more money on gambling, especially on pokies in 2020 than ever before. If we look at the statistics, it can be seen clearly that in 2020 the numbers were equivalent to each adult spending $572 on gambling activities. This figure is made up of spending $204 at the poker machines, $128 in the casinos, $160 on Lotto, and lastly, $80 at the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB).

Gambling in Australia

In Australia, gambling is so popular that this country has the highest number of casino gamblers in the world. More than 39% of the population gambles on a daily basis (about 6.8 million people).

In regards to land-based casinos, there are several reputable traditional casinos throughout Australia that offer an excellent gaming experience for their players. The most popular casinos include the following:

  • Crown Casino (Melbourne)
  • Adelaide Casino (Adelaide)
  • The Star (Sydney)
  • Casino Canberra (Canberra).

Besides gambling at brick-and-mortar casinos, Aussies love playing online as well. Indeed, more people gamble online than in traditional casinos. Why? Mostly because due to the pandemic many casinos have been closed. Plus, people realized that playing on their computers or mobile devices is more comfortable than going to land-based establishments.

In Australia, the most common forms of gambling include lotteries, instant scratch tickets, and electronic gaming machines.

Spendings on Gambling Has Increased by Almost 300% in Australia

According to the data published by two companies called illion and AlphaBeta, spendings on gambling has increased enormously during the current COVID-19 lockdowns in Australia. To be exact, the increase is almost 300%! Thus, Australians’ average weekly spending is clearly on the rise. Last month, the figures even hit a new record.

Although the data refers to gambling in general, the CEO of illion, Simon Bligh confirmed that the primary reason for the increase is online gambling. It seems that many people got familiar with online gambling during lockdowns. As Andrew Charlton, the Managing Director of Accenture said: “They’ve discovered there’s a poker machine in their pocket.”

Aussies love that they have the opportunity to gamble online while staying at home because of the lockdowns.

Will the Trend Continue?

While it is hard to predict the future, most likely, both in New Zealand and Australia the gambling industry will continue to grow in 2022 as well. Particularly, if land-based casinos can reopen at full capacity at the end of 2021 or next year.

Experts believe that the residents of these countries will keep pouring money into gambling and continue playing pokies, lotteries, and traditional casino games. Also, chances are that online casinos will become even more popular among Australians and New Zealanders in the upcoming years.
