BINMEI Participates in Formulation of National Standards for Phycocyanin

Phycocyanin is a rare natural nutrient extracted from spirulina, also known as blue spirulina. It is widely used in the medical industry because of its essential role in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and promoting the regeneration of human cells. Phycocyanin acts as not only a valuable protein but also an excellent natural food pigment and food additive. It has a wide application in the food industry to replace synthetic chemical dyes contributing to its nutritional and biological properties.

Although blue spirulina occupies many valuable values and has been studied and developed for 32 years, its application in the world is not satisfactory. Due to the lack of national standards for phycocyanin, only a few countries in the world can industrialize phycocyanin and apply it as a healthy food additive to the food industry.

The good news is that the Chinese national food safety standard for phycocyanin was officially promulgated in November 2020 and will be formally implemented on March 1, 2021, which means that the history of adopting enterprise standard for phycocyanin in China has come to an end. With the release and implementation of the national food safety standard for phycocyanin, it is expected that China’s blue spirulina market will experience substantial growth from 2021. At the same time, the scale of food enterprises using blue spirulina powder to replace synthetic chemical pigments will also usher in an explosive period.

Chemically synthesized pigments, such as brilliant blue and sunset yellow, have been used as the main force of food additives before. However, in Europe and the United States, these chemically synthesized pigments have been proved to be harmful to human health. Some synthetic food additives may cause hyperactivity in sensitive children and allergies. In view of this, consumers’ health awareness gradually strengthened and began to pay attention to food safety and natural functional ingredients, which made blue spirulina get more and more public exposure progressively.

As the only enterprise focusing on the research and extraction of phycocyanin in China, BINMEI has participated in the formulation of Chinese national food safety standards for phycocyanin. At the conference, the representative of BIMEI delivered a report on the product testing and elaborated the requirements of the international market for the quality and safety index of blue spirulina. A number of technical achievements of blue spirulina of BINMEI were recognized and selected into the national standard.

Established in 2013, BINMEI is the first phycocyanin manufacturers in China to start research and development of blue spirulina extraction and has the largest phycocyanin extraction plant with an enormous scale and output in China. With stable cooperation with well-known international food enterprises and domestic top academic institutions, the study and extraction technology of blue spirulina in terminal products of BINMEI are all at the top level in China. They are widely used in food, cosmetics, medicine, and other industries at home and abroad, receiving unanimous praise from customers.

The formulation of national food safety standards for phycocyanin in China is of great significance to the food industry. It ensures a relatively safe and healthy food manufacturing environment for consumers and helps further in-depth research on domestic phycocyanin technology for phycocyanin manufacturers. Having accumulated much experience in the field of extraction and manufacture of blue spirulina powder, BINMEI acts as a critical and leading role in the innovation and promotion of blue spirulina technology.
