Since November 2020, Thailand has lifted the travel ban and is open to tourists from about 56 countries. These countries are visa exempted. As the country is now open for tourism, they are still observing social distancing, and 14 days of quarantine is mandatory once in the country.

The Thai government is inviting those from countries with the lowest count in Covid-19 to apply. Even though the country is ready for tourists, the number of people that have applied for the visa has reduced dramatically since March.

Thailand is welcoming visitors from countries such as the US, France, and even Australia, whose nationals do not need to apply for a visa but will undergo a mandatory 2 weeks quarantine in their hotel rooms once they arrive. The easing of the eligibility requirements came when the country’s tourism industry suffered great loss due to the pandemic. According to a Bangkok Post report, only 825 visitors applied for the visa from 29 countries since the STV was launched. The number has reduced, seeing less than 2000 taking up the offer to apply for the new visas.

As of December 2020, Thailand recorded 60 deaths and 4008 confirmed cases, making the CDC declare it one of the safest destinations to visit because of the low count.

About 39 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Thailand, and all are tracing back to a hotel located in the Burmese border town of Tachileik. The said hotel is an entertainment complex, running as a center for debauchery, and had offered employment to about 180 Thai citizens. It is suspected, when the number of those infected started rising, many fled, crossing illegally into Thailand. A confirmation from the Disease Control Department confirmed 4 health workers who worked in a private hospital had also tested positive for the Covid-19 virus. Some worked in alternative state quarantine facilities based in Bangkok.

With the slight easing of conditions attached to the STV, the Thai prime minister dismissed suggestions of a second wave of the virus hitting the country. Though, there have been high numbers of Thais who are suspected of having re-entered Thailand from the neighboring country of Myanmar. These residents did not go through the recommended health checks or quarantine. Most of the country’s illegal entries have raised concerns, especially in the northern parts of Thailand and Bangkok. Many people have ended up testing positive and raising concerns about whether the country was safe and ready to reopen for tourists. However, the government is confident it can seal all loopholes at the borders and steady the ship until the vaccine is supplied. Meanwhile, the zones receiving a green light for visitors are highly regulated to keep the population cut out from other porous zones.
