5 Common Misconceptions About Writing

There are two main reasons why people write almost every day –  First, they love writing. And second, it is their job to do so. Most writers love their job.

Did you know that some people love writing but are driven away from being a writer due to the misconceptions attached to writing?

Misconceptions are common beliefs that contradict existing evidence. It is important to overcome misconceptions as it discourages people and prevents them from doing what they love the most.

This post discusses some of the common misconceptions about writing. Do not let them hold you back from pursuing writing as a career.

#1. Writing is not a real job

Don’t you just hate it when people say that? Well, as long as you are getting paid to do the work, it is considered a job. However, many writers do not have it that easy.

The thing with writing is that people need to practice their craft to put forward their best work. Does it require hard work? Yes, but then again, what job doesn’t? Writing is a creative job and different from usual jobs.

In typical jobs, you get paid if you show up and get fired when you do not. Writing, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. You need to find the motivation from within to do it. And that is what makes it so beautiful.

#2. Heartbreak is the best thing that can happen to a writer

Not only does it sound cruel but makes zero sense. Yes, the vulnerability of a broken heart will help a writer convey their emotions freely, but that can be done even without a broken heart. Good writers know how to bring forward their outstanding creativity.

To write, the experiences do not necessarily have to be your own. You can take inspiration from the experiences of your close ones, your friends, family. Let’s say you have to write about being in love and you have never been in love. Maybe your friends have, so write from their experiences. That is what is going to make you an outstanding writer.

#3. Writing is easy

A lot of people believe that writing is easy, all you need is a good vocabulary and a pen and paper. Well, here is a shocker: Writing is not at all easy. It takes hours of brainstorming, research, and planning. It can frustrate a person.

Writing does come naturally to some people but others tend to struggle a fair bit. As a writer, you need to develop characters, voices, and images in your head. You need to have a vivid imagination and produce some magical, out-of-the-box content.

However, writing is not too difficult either. All you need is a good amount of dedication and hard work. Just like any other work, writing requires commitment and effort.

#4. Writing is nothing more than a hobby

A hobby is something that people enjoy doing in their free time. All writers know that writing is so much more than just a hobby. It does not just bring words to life but offers an opportunity to escape reality. Writing takes time, commitment, and constant days of endless effort. It can even be stressful and unpleasant at times.

#5. Writing well is a gift

It is often believed that good writers are born and not made. Well truth be told, writing is a skill that anybody can learn. Talent is indeed important to be an exceptional writer, but writing is a craft. And just like any other craft, it can be learned.
