10 Home Maintenance Tips for Spring

Published

After a long, dark winter, spring’s bright sun and warm winds are, well, a breath of fresh air. The only downside? All that sunshine spotlights your leaf-filled gutters, cracked sidewalks and the dead plants in last year’s flower beds. Dwight Barnett, a certified master inspector with the American Society of Home Inspectors, shared this checklist to help you target the areas that need maintenance so you can get your chores done quickly, leaving you time to go outside and play in the sunshine.

Looking to upgrade your windows? Explore the options at atelier001 that will provide you with traditional windows that suit modern living.

  • Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement or crawl space. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris.
  • Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage. Also, when water pools in these low areas in summer, it creates a breeding ground for insects.
  • Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Make repairs now before the spring rains do more damage to the exposed wood.
  • From the ground, examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during winter. If your home has an older roof covering, you may want to start a budget for replacement. The summer sun can really damage roof shingles. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys need to be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.
  • Examine the exterior of the chimney for signs of damage. Have the flue cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep.
  • Inspect concrete slabs for signs of cracks or movement. All exterior slabs except pool decks should drain away from the home’s foundation. Fill cracks with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. When weather permits, power-wash and then seal the concrete.
  • Remove firewood stored near the home. Firewood should be stored at least 18 inches off the ground at least 2 feet from the structure.
  • Check outside hose faucets for freeze damage. Turn the water on and place your thumb or finger over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it is likely the pipe inside the home is damaged and will need to be replaced. While you’re at it, check the garden hose for dry rot.
  • Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system. Clean coils operate more efficiently, and an annual service call will keep the system working at peak performance levels. Change interior filters on a regular basis.
  • Check your gas- and battery-powered lawn equipment to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharp cutting blades will make yardwork easier.

The Bottom Line

It is your responsibility to understand as many details as you can about the property you may soon call home especially when it’s spring. Home inspections reveal the inner workings of the property, allowing you to be informed of all the perks and pitfalls the home has.

The Benefits of Installing Hurricane Window Protection in Your Home

The Windows in Luxury Homes

Hurricane windows are an excellent way to protect your home against storm damage. Hurricane shutters are essential for people living in hurricane-prone areas since they protect your windows better than plywood. They are available in various styles and materials that are also visually appealing. To get the best hurricane shutters, homeowners must consider aesthetics, function, and substance. Leading insurance companies also recognize them, making you eligible for premium discounts.

They also reduce noise pollution and increase the energy efficiency of your home. This translates to lower monthly utility bills. In addition, they provide a more comfortable living environment.

Noise Reduction

Besides providing permanent protection against wind and rain, hurricane window protection can also reduce noise in your home. This is especially important if you live in an area with high traffic and loud neighbors.

Impact windows are designed with multiple layers of glass and insulation to keep out noise and prevent leaking air from entering your home during storms. They also offer superior protection against flying debris and intruders.

Hurricane fabric is a flexible, woven material that works much like the bouncy fabric used on trampolines to deflect flying debris away from windows. It can be installed year-round or temporarily, as needed, and it is often cheaper than other options.

Increased Home Value

If you have a home in an area regularly hit by hurricanes like Florida, installing impact windows may be worth the investment. These windows offer several benefits, including improved energy efficiency, comfort, and permanent storm protection.

Unlike regular glass, hurricane windows are made from two or more pieces of tempered glass reinforced with a strong polymer layer to prevent the glass from breaking into dangerous shards in a strong windstorm.

In addition, hurricane windows are also more energy efficient and help you save on your monthly utility bills. These savings are often recouped through an energy tax incentive so that you can recoup some or all of your installation costs over time.

If you want to increase your home’s value, installing hurricane window protection is a great choice! It will also reduce your insurance premiums and make your home safer.

Reduced Insurance Premiums

Whether you live in a hurricane-prone region, there are plenty of ways to save on your insurance premium. Raising your deductible and staying with the same insurer are common methods, but there are other options that most homeowners need to learn about or learn about once a disaster hits them.

A great way to reduce your insurance premium is to install hurricane windows. High-impact windows have been shown to resist high winds up to 200 mph, and they can be purchased in various styles and sizes.

While hurricane windows cost more than traditional ones, they are worth the investment. Not only will they prevent storm damage and protect you from intruders, but they will also help lower your energy costs. In addition, they are eligible for a tax incentive that will help recoup some of the cost.

Increased Home Comfort

Hurricane windows provide an array of benefits to homeowners. From noise reduction to increased home value, they can improve the safety and comfort of any home.

Shattering your windows in a hurricane is a devastating scenario that could be very costly. Besides the apparent window-breaking damage, storms can also cause severe water penetration, leading to structural issues and mold growth.

Thankfully, hurricane windows are designed to withstand the intense wind and flying debris associated with hurricanes and tropical storms in Florida. In addition, they protect your belongings from storm debris by blocking rain and snow from entering through the window frame.

5 Reasons to Choose Steel Building Over Traditional Homes

Steel Shed

When it comes to building your dream home or business, you have a variety of options to choose from. However, steel buildings are worth considering if you’re looking for a durable, versatile, and eco-friendly choice. For example, such metal constructions are an excellent example of this, as they offer a range of custom-built structures designed to meet their client’s unique needs.

A recent Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute report found that metal buildings account for approximately 60% of all low-rise non-residential construction in Canada. Steel building Ontario is at the forefront of this trend, offering a range of custom-built structures designed to meet their client’s unique needs.

This article explores five reasons why such metal buildings are better than traditional homes.

Durability

Steel buildings are incredibly durable and long-lasting. They can withstand harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, high winds, and extreme temperatures. Additionally, this metal is resistant to fire, pests, and rot, making it an ideal choice for buildings in areas that are prone to natural disasters. The durability of this metal also means that it requires minimal maintenance over time, which can save you money in the long run.

Versatility

One of the most significant advantages of such constructions is their versatility. They can be customized to meet any need or style, from residential homes to commercial structures. They are modular in design, so they can be easily modified to suit changing needs. For example, if you need to expand your steel house, it can be easily done without tearing down and rebuilding the entire structure. They also offer various design options, including various colours, textures, and finishes. This means that you have complete creative control over your project.

Affordability

Compared to traditional homes, steel buildings are often more affordable. Steel is a cost-effective material, and its strength and durability mean that it can withstand the test of time, reducing maintenance and repair costs. Additionally, they are energy-efficient, which means you can save money on heating and cooling bills. Such constructions are also affordable in terms of construction. Designing, manufacturing, and erecting such a building is typically more efficient than traditional construction methods. The pre-engineered metal building components are fabricated in a factory, reducing the time and labour required on the construction site.

Eco-friendliness

These constructions are eco-friendly. Steel is 100% recyclable, making it an environmentally responsible option. Additionally, they can be designed to include insulation, which helps regulate temperature and reduce energy consumption. They are energy-efficient and can help you save money on your utility bills. Choosing such a metal building is sustainable and can help reduce your carbon footprint and support the environment.

Speed of Construction

Compared to traditional homes, these structures can be constructed much faster. A steel building in Ontario, for example, can be designed, fabricated, and assembled in a fraction of the time it takes to build a traditional home. This is because they are typically pre-engineered, which means the pieces are manufactured in a factory and then assembled on-site. This can save you time and money and reduce disruption to your daily life during construction. In addition, such metal constructions can be erected up to 50% faster than traditional structures.

Whether you’re building a new home, a commercial building, or a storage facility, these metal buildings are an excellent choice to provide you with a long-lasting, low-maintenance, and sustainable structure.

Selecting Rooftop Solar for The House

Residential Solar Panels

As we sweat through the summer, another energy trend is picking up steam: solar. The solar sector is flourishing not only in certain places but all around the United States. As more and more people learn about solar energy’s benefits, more solar enterprises and suppliers are joining the market.

House call

Always make sure the solar firm you meet with is ready to accommodate your specific requests for your property in California before signing any contracts. If that’s the case, a professional installer from the solar company in California will come to your house to measure the area where the solar panels will go.

Get some expert advice, and some recommendations, and have him ask you a bunch of questions to see whether he’s adaptable enough to answer all of your queries calmly. Do you feel like he’s taking the time to make sure you understand everything, or that he’s simply dropping by without any regard for you or your needs in solar panels for your home? Even this will provide you with an accurate evaluation of the solar installer and the firm with which he is affiliated.

Setting it up

Mounted solar panels should be angled such that the sunny side faces south and are not shaded by nearby trees. Mounting the solar panels in the optimal location is essential for maximum output.

The price factor

Many homeowners may base their decision on the price of the solar panels; however, although it’s tempting to go with the least expensive option, doing so may not provide you with nearly as high of a return. While the final cost of installing solar panels for your house may vary by solar companies, it will always be proportional to the amount of energy your home consumes.

Thankfully, solar panels have been at their lowest cost point for many years running. If you need help deciding which solar panels are appropriate for your house, you should talk to a professional solar panel installation.

Verify now underway initiatives

In order to make an informed decision about which installers to use, it is important to research the outcomes of their previous Solar Projects. In order to bolster your confidence and make sure you’re headed in the correct route, you can even question the installer about the projects they currently have going. Good businesses are always pleased to report on project developments and provide information to the public.

Energy cost reduction from solar panels

By producing your own renewable energy without having to pay for it, you may lessen your dependency on your utility company and lower your energy costs. The good news for homes is that solar panels are functional all year round, even on overcast days, with their peak performance occurring in the summer.

Depending on where you reside and the cost of the solar panels from the solar panels companies, the solar payback period may be as little as 11–12 years for many homes. If you combine your solar PV system with a solar battery, you may be able to reduce your energy costs even more.

Chargers that use solar energy

Furthermore, peak residential energy use is between 6-7 pm, when there is often little to no sunshine. If energy is stored throughout the day, it may be used in the evening, when solar panels aren’t producing power.

In the event of a blackout, certain solar batteries may be used as a backup power source. Even if solar panels stop producing energy when the power goes out, you can rest certain that you will always have access to electricity if you have a backup capability.

Kitchen Storage

Kitchen storage can often be a challenge, especially in smaller kitchens where every inch counts. But with some creative thinking, you can maximize the space you have and make your kitchen more functional and organized. Here are some innovative kitchen storage ideas to help you make the most of your kitchen space.

Vertical Storage Solutions: Maximizing vertical space is a great way to add storage to your kitchen. Install shelves or hooks on the walls to store pots, pans, utensils, and other kitchen gadgets. You can also use a pegboard to hang pots, pans, and other items, creating an attractive and functional wall display. With vertical storage, always  consider the weight of an appliance before you place it on a hook. Invest in strong and durable shelves and hooks so you do not have to worry about breakages.

Under-cabinet Storage: Under-cabinet storage is a great way to add extra storage space to your kitchen. You can install pull-out baskets, hooks, or shelves to store items such as cutting boards, baking sheets, and small appliances. This not only adds storage space, but it also keeps your counters clear, giving you more working space.

This style of storage is particularly convenient for the kitchen tools that you do not use very often. Those that are regularly used should be neatly arranged over the counter to enable easy access. Ensure that your under-cabinet storage is also well-organized so you can have an easy time finding particular items when you need them.

Pull-out pantry: A pull-out pantry can help you maximize the storage space in your kitchen. Instead of stacking cans and boxes on top of each other in your pantry, a pull-out pantry allows you to easily see and access everything. You can find pull-out pantry systems that fit into your existing cabinet, making this a great option for those who want to add storage space without remodeling their kitchen.

Magnetic knife holder: A magnetic knife holder is a great way to store your knives and keep them within reach. You can install a magnetic strip on the wall or inside a cabinet door to hold your knives. This not only frees up drawer space, but it also keeps your knives easily accessible. This method also keeps your knives away from reach in case you have kids in the house who might be curious to hold them.

Stacking baskets: Stacking baskets are a great way to add storage to your kitchen. You can use them to store fruits and vegetables or to organize pantry items such as canned goods, snacks, and baking supplies. Stacking baskets are also great for keeping your counters clutter-free, and you can easily move them from the counter to the pantry when you need to.

Over-the-door organizer: An over-the-door organizer is a great way to add storage to your kitchen without taking up valuable floor space. You can use it to store spices, cooking oils, and other small items, freeing up space in your pantry or cabinets. You can also use this kind of storage for your kitchen towels and other other items such as aluminum foils, cling films, among other things.

Corner shelving: Corners are often underutilized spaces in the kitchen, but with the help of corner shelving, you can add extra storage space. You can find corner shelves that fit into the corner of your cabinets, giving you a great place to store items such as pots, pans, and baking dishes. This will help you create more space in other areas in your kitchen that you can use for storage of other items.

Sliding shelf inserts: Sliding shelf inserts are a great way to maximize the space in your Oppolia kitchen cabinets and make it easier to access items. You can find sliding shelf inserts that fit into your existing cabinets, giving you the ability to slide out and access items at the back of your cabinets. This is a great way to store your spices and other ingredients that you use for cooking.

Hidden appliances: Appliances such as toasters and coffee makers can take up valuable counter space. To free up space, you can use a cabinet or pull-out drawer to store these appliances when not in use. This not only keeps your counters clutter-free, but it also makes it easier to access these appliances when you need them.

Multifunctional islands: Multifunctional kitchen islands are an excellent way to add extra storage and functionality to your kitchen. They can be used to store kitchen essentials like pots and pans, and they can also be used as a preparation area or a breakfast bar.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are many innovative kitchen storage ideas that can help you maximize space and keep your kitchen organized. From vertical shelving and pull-out cabinets to wall-mounted pot racks and under-sink organizers, there is a solution for every kitchen. The key is to find the solution that works best for your specific needs and to take advantage of every inch of space in your kitchen.
